Photo: Getty / Adél Békefi For many of us, fresh cherries are an ir-to-summer snack-and as luck would have, this oral-regared stone fruit is as healthy as it gets. In addition to being high in both, cherries are loaded with anti-inflammatory nutrients called anthocyanins, which are those that give them their vibrant dark red and burgundy-purple, says Suzanne Dixon, RDN, registered dietitian and epidemiologist in Portland, Oregon. Cherries have such a powerful anti-inflammatory activity, they can help reduce the risk of several inflammatory diseases such as , diabetes and cancer. "They have even been studied as a way to reduce pain and inflammation associated with and after training," says Dixon. But after eating too many (which is easy to do as they are beyond the delish), you may also have noticed another less attractive talent that cherries possess: Your ability to run through your digestive tract almost as soon as you have swallowed them. What's behind the stand that the cherries fell inside and how can you stop the madness? We went to the experts to find out: Why do the cherries make you shit? Cherries contain fiber, a relief of known constipation. Depending on the type of cherry, they may contain any place per cup-both soluble and insoluble. "Sustainable fiber helps the body digest food more slowly and control blood sugar levels," says the Texas dietitian, RD. Meanwhile, insoluble fiber helps to add bulk to the feces, which helps to move the waste through the body more efficiently. The result? Less intestinal traffic jams. Related: However, it is probably not the cherries fiber that is causing your digestive lodes. For most people, cherries do not contain enough fiber to cause a noticeable increase in travel number two when they eat only one portion or two. (A portion is 1/2 cup cherries, or approximately 1 gram of fiber, so not much.) "When people see a laxative effect of cherries, they may be reacting to two other features of this fruit," says Dixon. The first is the sugar alcohols that naturally occur that contain cherries. "Most people think of sugar alcohols as they are only found in processed foods, gums and candy," says Dixon. "But some fruits contain sugar alcohols too." So if you're sensitive to eating like low calorie ice cream and dietary sweets, you're probably also very sensitive to cherries. "Even a single portion of cherries will make you shit and really fast," says Dixon. Cherries are also a natural source of salicylates. You can recognize the word because it is uber-similar to salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. "Salicylic acid is one of many different salicylates," says Dixon. "Some people are sensitive to these substances and when they take aspirin or eat too many cherries they end up with more GI alteration." (The arteries do not contain almost as much as aspirin, but they do contain enough to cause a reaction in people who are super sensitive.) How to enjoy cherries without stomach problems Do not sound to the entire Captain Obvious, but the best way to enjoy cherries-without screwing to the bathroom after-is in moderation. "Most people, even those who are somewhat sensitive to sugar alcohols and salicylates in cherries, can still enjoy them," says Dixon. The trick is to experience to find your tolerance threshold. To start, stick to a portion (1/2 cup or about 7 cherries, depending on their size), see how your intestine reacts and goes from there. Take the time to measure them, so you don't feel tempted to keep hitting them in the mouth, you run the risk of your interiors taking reprisals. Another useful strategy is to avoid combining cherries with other foods you know you don't tolerate well. "If you are sensitive to cherries, you can also be sensitive to other fruits with similar substances in them (especially sugar alcohols),", says Dixon, such as watermelon, walnuts, nectarines, pears, apples and avocado. Knowing this, you definitely don't want to eat cherries as part of a large fruit salad with these other potentially problematic foods. On the back side, eat cherries with food you know you tolerate well. "Diluting the substances found in cherries may decrease their effect on the GI tract," says Dixon. Eating them with other foods, as part of a typical meal that with an empty stomach like a snack, can make them less likely to cause GI discomfort. Use frozen black cherries in , add fresh cherries to Greek yogurt or throw dry cherries in your , suggests Doherty. "All these methods help to incorporate this healthy fruit into your diet without overdoing it," he says. And if you are super sensitive to sugar alcohols or salicylates, eating cherries may not be worth the impression of the Olympics for the throne. It is not the only factor, but the fiber -- which adds the size and water content of your stool -- is key. Women must shoot for 21 to 25 grams a day, and men, from 30 to 38. RaspberriesRuby red and delicious for themselves, with a little cream, or added to yogurt, give you a touch of calcium and vitamin C. A lightweight tart with raspberries and an almond bark could raise the intake of fiber even more (also almonds have a lot of it) - only careful with sugar and fat. Pears This sweet fruit is full of vitamins and antioxidants, and has a lot of fiber and water, which can help with constipation. A pear has only about 60 calories. Popcorn is not just perfect movie food -- it can be a healthy snack at any time, as long as you don't bury it in salt and butter. But you may not know it's loaded with fiber. Watermelon It doesn't have much fiber, but it's 92% water, and that can foster an intestinal movement. It is also full of nutrients, with antioxidants that help protect your cells, as well as vitamins A, B and C, and lycopene, which helps protect you from UV rays. Avena Take this for breakfast and you will be less hungry - and less likely to eat - during the day. It is a good source of fiber, and oats absorb a lot of water, too, that helps with digestion. Bonus: It can also help lower the LDL, or "bad cholesterol", and gives it complex carbohydrates, protein, calcium and iron. AlmondsYou can put them in salads and desserts, eat them with yogurt and cheese, or grind them to make a tasty filling of cake or pasta. Turnip GreensSometimes overcooked by their most famous cousins -- curly, spinach and green in the neck -- these have long been a grappa of the southern cuisine. They are traditionally cooked with salty pork or ham for flavor, but you can use smoked turkey wings to lower salt and fat. Potato SaladThe chilled potatoes have fiber and a lot of something called "resistant star". This digestion "resiste" and part of it ends in its large intestine, where it helps the good bacteria grow. FarroAn ancient wheat strain that is a grap in Italy, has an abundant texture, chewing and a delicious nut flavor. Try it instead of rice or potatoes for a fiber-rich starch with protein and calcium. Try not to think about the morning ritual of BM's grandfather - but they were on something. Prunes can be good with yogurt or cheese or cooked with poultry and desserts. And they can really help you get back, even better than some free-sale laxatives. It's not clear why they work so well, but they have sorbitol -- which helps their intestines take more water -- as well as fiber. Lentils These can make for a large side dish (teal them with sausage), and are good in salads, too. They can even be careful enough to have as a main course, thanks to a healthy amount of proteins. And, oh yeah, they help you to shit. YogurtThe bacteria that spin the milk to yogurt are also good for your digestive tract. All yogurt helps keep it healthy and keeps you regular, but yogurt with live or probiotic cultures can be even better helping you go. CaféThis has some unconcerned scientists... makes some people fall, but nobody knows why exactly. It's probably not caffeine, because studies have shown that even the decafed version works for some people. A theory is that it affects the lining of your stomach and small intestine somehow, or may be linked to a hormone that makes your colon contract. And that could help you on your next bath visit. WaterYep, good old water can help you get back to the track. You can get it from the tap -- filtered if necessary -- and other drinks, soups, and even fruits and vegetables.
